Short Vrs. Long Term Memories
A myALZteam Member asked a question 💭

My mum can remember the lunch I gave her, but had no idea what "the wizard of oz" was, we literally watch it every Christmas.
Isn't the short term memory supposed to go before the long term?
We are new to this, it was a pretty sudden onset last month.

My wife’s symptoms were confusing to me too....her short term memory seemed to be “selective” for lack of a better word...seemed to be no rhyme or reason to what she remembered or forgot. Short term memory loss will typically be the first symptoms. Then some long term memory, last in first out. But it isn’t quite that simple. Multitudes of things can happen simultaneously. There is a typical course the disease takes but it isn’t precise, which was what I experienced with my wife. Eventually I gave up trying to figure it out.

There is a good online class about understanding dementia starting up again in June. You can find it at mooc.utas.edu.au Alzheimers is noted for short term memory loss other forms of dementia have different beginnings, depending on what area of the brain is affected. Hugs

ChristinaAnne,
It's really hard to have your mom forgetting special memories of your time together. I send you a big hug as you go through some of the grieving that comes with having to loose those as shared memories with her.
My mom does not remember much from my childhood or upbringing. Although I am now 41, and so that seems like long-term memory, I find that the long-term memory she has held onto the strongest is her own childhood.
It really is such a journey to have certain things suddenly not be remembered. Sometimes I am surprised by what my mom does and does not remember. It can change too. Sometimes she will recollect a lot and the next day, or time of day, she would not be able to.
Supporting you from afar.
