How Do We Keep Mom From Driving

A myALZteam Member asked a question 💭
Oklahoma City, OK

We disconnected the battery, that lasted for a couple weeks then she called someone to fix it. We unhooked the garage door, that lasted a few days before she called a company out to fix it. She insists she can drive, but most times shes hidden her keys, her purse and can't find them. We have installed a tracker on her car, what else can we do for her safety

Lisa, you could have the DMV call your Mom in for a driving test. If she fails the test, the DMV would revoke her driving license. Of course, you don’t want to be the villain in this process, so, perhaps you mom’s doctor, if he/she shares your concern, could contact the DMV.

Hi Lisa! The driving test Robert suggests is a great idea, especially if you are able to have her doctor “prescribe” taking the test. If you are comfortable with it, you could also move the car somewhere else, parking it in someone’s garage. The excuse you can give is that a relative needed to borrow the car, or perhaps that it needed major repairs that are going to take some time. Settling into not driving seems to be about soothing the lost feeling of indepence so having someone available for errands and small trips is key! You might want to think about blocking her mechanic’s phone number, too! Sending hugs and support!❤️

Take your mother's car and her keys and assure her that when she needs a lift, you will make necessary arrangements. She might be angry, hurt, confused but that is not as bad as the financial and legal mess she or her legal guardian would be responsible for should she cause a serious accident. It's not worth the risk. Sell the car and use the funds for Uber drivers.

Hi Lisa! You are doing a great job! This is definitely one of those issues that almost everyone struggles with and no one has the exact right answer for anyone else’s situation. I am so glad that you reached out for ideas and I hope you are able to find a solution for your Mom that keeps her safe and gives you some peace of mind.❤️
