She says it doesn’t itch but she has scratched one spot on her head until it’s bald. The dermatologist said there is nothing that needs treated but she can’t leave that spot alone. Now she picks and scratches her face and arms and has visible sores. The neurologist also said there is nothing he can prescribe to help. She does not seem to be anxious. I’m at a loss as to how to get her to stop picking and scratching.
Delusions and hallucinations re not uncommon in dementia moderate to late stages and this can include sensory hallucinations where the person feels crawling/itching/burning skin sensations. There are anti itch lotions but these may not help as the abnormal skin feeling is sent by damaged brain cells....a low dose of meds like Risperdal or Seroquel might dull down the sensory hallucination and slow/stop the picking. There is info online re all the hallucinations ie seeing / hearing / body sensations etc.
Ummm, my dad does the same. Yes he’s got dry skin. Doc recommends cortizone and ucerine cream after a shower. I think it is anxiousness!! Needs something to do their hands. Feel a fluffy blanket or toy. 🌻
Make sure you put cream on her. I would suggest getting small stuffed animals that she can hold in her hands like a baby. Den has two of them and is lost without them
Sometimes the fiddle with helps for short periods of time. I have drawer and a box with things foe him to rummage through.
My H. has what his dermatologist calls “Picker Nodules” on his chest and neck. If not scratching he’s rubbing them. He was prescribed a cream. They are shrinking, finally. Every time I catch him, I remind him to quit picking.🦋
