Fall River, MA

My dad has been going into the bathroom, but apparently pees in the cats litter box. Is this something that will get worse?

Members shared the deeply challenging reality of loved ones with dementia urinating in inappropriate places, with many describing similar experiences including missing the toilet, using sinks, showers, basement floors, and even outdoor areas. Several members offered hard-won wisdom, including the importance of supervision during bathroom trips, using protective undergarments, keeping cleaning supplies readily accessible, and learning to recognize the sounds that indicate something is amiss. A recurring theme was finding moments of grace and even humor amid the difficulty, choosing to laugh when possible rather than cry, and accepting that these behaviors will likely progress without consistent redirection and support.

To answer your question, if there is no one there to correct his behavior, it will continue. Have you reached out to community organisations for help with your parents? Some type of help is probably available to you. Hang in.

Yes I'm afraid so, at least in our case. My husband will pee in the shower or on the floor and doesn't realize he has. Is upsetting, but now I'm just glad when he hits the shower and I have to laugh. A lot of times you have to laugh or cry with this disease. Please choose to laugh when you can.

I had this problem during the last year of my husband's life. wearing attends helped sometimes but he would still pull it down and pee in the corner, the sink, by the bed. I got pretty good at "hearing" if it was going in the toilet or somewhere else and running to see were so I could clean it up right away. Thankfully, I had a rinse and vac machine that helped a lot. Not a fun time.
