If you don’t think it would startle your loved one, there are motion activated night lights and even ones that you can get that light up steps and toilet bowls when you are near them. We also were able to get some night lights at ikea that rotate so you can change the direction they are shining - the one I have in my Mom’s room is pointed at the floor so when she is in bed, she can’t see the light.

I found a nightlife at Dollar tree which is adjustable. Works great.

I leave a night light on when he is doing good; however, it's a double edged sword when he goes in an episode. The light agitates him and keeps him "awake" but if I remove it, he's up and stumbling around in the dark, falls and injures himself.
