Mom Is Having Trouble Getting Up And Walking. How To Help?

A myALZteam Member asked a question 💭
Los Angeles, CA

A physical therapist once told me that a walker is not an option for Alz patients as they won't be able to use it correctly. What options are there to help her get around? She's in the mid-late stage.

Helenas, the PT wasn’t quite right in my experience. Some people retain sufficient mental capacity to use a walker when their physical strength or confidence is lacking and they would benefit from it. For others, like my wife, the PT would be spot on. Jackie’s physical strength long outlasted her mental capacity to use aids. I think the key is assessment by a qualified person - here in UK that would be an occupational therapist, not sure about where you are. An assessment would help you get equipment that suits your mom’s needs and abilities and, importantly is safe for her and others around her. Good luck.
