What is the difference between vascular dementia and Alzheimer's?

My mother has Dementia and my dad was diagnosed with Alzheimer's last summer. Is there a way to find out if I have early stage Dementia/Alzheimer's?

I am reading so much about people who has alzheimers have diabetes and if you control the diabetes then you have a chance of getting rid of alzheimers.
