Depends on the infection Frank but probably the infection will return. As the deteriorate the healthy cells go and the infections return. Its sad to say but it happens 😥

Frank, so very sorry. Have you considered the idea of having hospice services come in? As a former provider, a good organization will support both the person who is declining and their family; most people wait until the time of death is near. Unfortunately the full benefit of care through hospice is not obtained by the loved one or their family unless services are initiated a bit earlier in the disease process. Perhaps something to think about and discuss with family/physician.

I think the doctor might have been pointing out that Kath's baseline is as you describe, and was letting you know things weren't getting any better. Sometimes, families decide there will be no more aggressive treatment. For example, if a person develops pneumonia, UTI, etc. they will not receive antibiotic therapy if the family requests after consultation with the physician. The thought being that the person wouldn't want to return to their current baseline so let nature take its course and keep the person comfortable.

As a family member when i first heard the above I was horrified. As I proceeded through my nursing career, I began to understand. I wonder if the doctor was thinking about what you described Kath would return to as her baseline following 12 days in the hospital and out of her element. Sometimes Old Mother Nature needs to have her way. Families do choose to withhold treatment and hospice is very good by eliminating pain and anxiety through medications.
