For quite some time we have found that one dish meals work best, especially if they can be served in a bowl or my husband's plate with higher sides. Most important is that everything must be eaten with only one "utensil" - fork, spoon, or fingers. We are moving toward finger foods most of the time. I've seen one memory care community that advertises they have created lovely meals all served as one or two bite appetizers. I enjoy cooking and prepare nice meals most of the time but I'm not sure… read more
Hi @A myALZteam Member, I wouldn’t be too fussed about ‘fingers’. Anything he can pick up in his fingers is ‘finger food’. So, staying away from things like peas or roasts with gravy etc are good to avoid. He can get a completely nutritious meal from carrots, potatoes, broccoli pieces, parsnips, tomatoes, asparagus, etc plus apples, bananas, chicken drumsticks, steak cut into bite size pieces (fillet steak cooked slightly rare and sliced on the angle both looks appealing and is delicious and juicy and can easily be eaten with fingers), chops, even sausages. I think you get the drift. If he eats with his fingers thats ok! If he can just use a fork (as my wife does) thats good too. There is a saying ‘fingers were made before forks’ and like most ‘sayings’ it has some merit to it in certain circumstances. I wouldn’t make meals any more stressful than they have to be. If he’s eating, that’s the main game. How is secondary.
@A myALZteam Member , I was smiling to my self when thinking of how we have handled dinners. I just chop up what ever we have for my Mom. Sometimes she will use a spoon or fork but mostly she gets her fingers into her food while I feed her. Oh my, there are so many stages and up and downs with alzheimers. Patience is the name of the game. Also we have days now that we rely on Boost for her nurishment if she wont eat. There really isn't a right or wrong way to do things. Trial and error and that can even change with each meal time. Sorry if I am going on but I put my parents to bed and now my turn. I stay with them just about all the time now. It is to much on my father and his poor health so it is easier to stay here. Hope you are having a good and relaxing night. God bless
Tonight I did fix a finger food meal..... baked breaded fish into cubes, baby baked potatoes and cubes of roasted sweet potatoes. Had to watch him tho, because he still tried to put too much in his mouth at once. But it sure was a lot less messy. And I now feed him before I eat so I can be on top of this"pocketing" thing he does! Love this forum!! Here's to all of you who are dealing with whatever on Antigua vCard enough day!!💜
Our situation is the same.....one dish meals and one utensil, lift ware plate spoon or fork. I use a lot of finger food for snacks but never tried to do a whole meal that way. Would love to try it. I do crackers and peanut butter or cheese, hard boiled eggs, celery or carrot sticks I break up sandwiches into 6 and give him one piece at a time or he pockets. Everything on the plate in his cheek then can't swallow it safely. I cut fruit the same way. Hoping for suggestions also!!
My mom likes grilled cheese (sometomes I add ham or turkey) i cut it into strips or cubes. That is my go to meal if she is fussy
