My Husband Of 55 + Years Has Alzheimers And Is Heading Into The Final Stages I Believe.

Unfortunately , he ALSO has COPD and is required to have oxygen 24 /7. This has been the case for nearly a year now, causing MAJOR issues for me, his 78 Y/O caretaker , to deal with. He frequently takes his canula off and PUTS IT IN THE TOILET, which means I have to replace it with a new one or sometimes replace the 25 feet of walk- around tubing as well . I try to make sure I go with him to the bathroom but sometimes I am in another room when he does this. He often takes it off and today… read more

Daley Try some kind of cover so it won't fall into toilet. Maybe this will help! Hugs! Hope you are okay!❤️Does sound like my mom too!😟

Thank you for your response, Velia, I have a small amount of help which will be ending a t the end of this month. So far as I know, hospice is available only when the Dr says there is 6 months or less to live.
Sorry about your mom, Velia! My husband is having some type of kidney or bladder problem and blood work says he has some kidney failure. So it could be we are heading down the same path as your mom did!
What I see is a double whammy. He is loosing brain cells from both the Alzheimers AND the COPD ! Of course him frequently taking the O2 off hastens the process. Not a good combo!!!

I do need help, but have little money, so I am trying to seek out other avenues to get it. I do have family but, as you might expect, they have jobs and families of their own. For now, my son is here with me but he has his own health issues and he does help, but also works from home. .

Several things. Start the process of getting help now.
the longer you wait, the longer it will take. I am not sure that what you said about him walking and eating disqualifies him from vets benefits. I have a friend I may be able to see if he knows about that issue.

Next: I have discovered that some of my husband's meds were causing him to behave in bad ways. I have taken him off some of them and it has made a big difference, He was getting up and urinating anywhere he felt like. but he has stopped that , I do go with him every time during the day and he sleeps quit e well at night now, so that has stopped as well. He had been on a medicine for restless leg syndrome and the dr thought that may have contributed to that kind of behavior so he put him on something else. Well, that stopped but other things started so i just stopped it all. He is very tired, but he is also anemic so many issues working against it.
Really do hate to hear all you are going through . I have no t had to do as much clean up as you have but think about the meds he is on. I will tell you what he was on if you would like to know.
as everyone tells me, try to take care of you

I know what you are going thru. My husband gets up and instead of using bathroom he does it everywhere. I follow him every time he gets up. I cannot watch him every second so sometimes I end up cleaning floors, walls, curtains, I am exhausted. I AM looking for help but since he does not have medicate just Medicare n private insurance n they take long to be approved for a caretaker. He is a veteran but still the same it will take long and since he walks and eats they told me he may not qualify at all. SO I loss my full time job to take care of him. It's very stressful for me, I pray that we can get help Today was a bad day. Lets see what tomorrow will bring. THANKS for listening
