Members shared their experiences with loved ones sleeping more as dementia progresses, with many observing that what looks like sleep is often escape from the difficulty of focusing or engaging with reality, while actual sleep patterns become disrupted with daytime drowsiness and nighttime wakefulness. Several members offered practical strategies that have helped, including adjusting medication timing to support better nighttime sleep, keeping loved ones engaged with structured daily activities like games, walks, or visits from familiar people, and checking with doctors to rule out medical causes like low iron, B12 deficiency, or thyroid issues. A recurring theme was the challenge of finding routines that work when dementia deepens, with caregivers expressing both the isolation of the journey and gratitude for the solidarity and ideas shared by others facing similar struggles.

Mums bloods are good the dr said her blood tests are better than the young ones so when mum is sleepy its because of the mixed dementia and choosing not to be responsive.
Hugs and prayers god bless to all.x

I agree, @A myALZteam Member. I think a lot of what appears to be sleep is escape. It seems to be just too hard to focus. At least that is what I see in my husband. Most of the time he responds right away if you speak to him or make a loud noise. I also think people do sleep more as the dementia deepens and this is sometimes accentuated buy the lack of good sleep during the night.

I give my mum her meds at night as that way it helps her sleep through the night.
But mum sleeps a lot during the day i think this happens as the dementia becomes more advanced.
As the dementia progresses i think it becomes harder for them to make conversation and they sit with their eye's shut so they can escape reality but they are not always asleep.
That is my interpratation from caring for mum.
I find that if mum gets visitors from the past she will stay awake for a while.
I hope you get the answers your looking for.
God bless you and your family.xx
