What Type Of Doctor Should I Be Taking My Mom To?
A myALZteam Member asked a question 💭

My Mom was diagnosed with the early onset of Alzheimer's a few years ago...by a neuropsychologist and then her regular physician (a DO) did follow ups, sent her to a neurologist, etc. However, due to some issues (Mom no longer being able to drive, etc.) she would no longer see her regular physician. So while looking for a new one that was in her insurance network, I looked for someone who was experienced with elder care, dementia, Alzheimer's, etc. He is also a DO...he is a little further… read more

My oldest brother mentioned a geriatric Dr., even if you pick another MD, if they have a lot of elderly patients, it's a good sign. Our Dr really cares about Dad, and it's always a head to toe examination, no rushing, she treats him like he is her father ! I would like to look into getting an MRI of his brain to see if the mental decline is due to a stroke at 55, or plague, or both.

Also, Michigan State has a DO program, you may think about having some students interact with your Mom - they are learning as well as taking time with her/sam

We are now using a neuropsychiatrist. We have been to two neurologists and have had 3 regular family doctor. We are really happy now with a young primary care doctor who is watching my husband, but referring him to the neuropsychiatrist for that specific care. He also involves him in some current research, which gives him a sense of importance and doing something useful for other dementia patients. Both doctors make us feel that we are like family and the redundant stories and inaccurate memory are just part of the process and patiently listen.

Mom has a doctor and PA that treats her where she lives. They constantly update me on medical issues and are very proactive. She was seeing a psychiatrist for her memory meds, but it is too hard to transport her any more, and she is past where the meds are effective. Her last scan indicated a high probability of combined vascular dementia and Alzheimer’s. I have honestly thought about getting an appointment with him to help me deal with mom, hubs and kid. Really liked the way he respected her and was honest with me on her progression. Doubt I can ever get hubs to see him though.

DO's tend to be holistic docs, but I would search for one who is doing Palliative Care as well as Geriatrics. Usually they will take more time with their patients and families/sam
