Would I Be Held Responsible If I Didn't Call For Help Should Husband Be Taken Ill?
A myALZteam Member asked a question 💭

Husband doesn't want to carry on living. Says I'm not to call for help (Doctor/ambulance) if taken ill. Has already had heart and stroke problems and now legally blind to go with Alzheimer's. My concern is would I be held legally responsible should anything happened and I haven't tried to get help?

Have you considered bringing hospice in to help with your husband? If he was a hospice patient there would be no issue about calling 911, etc. Just something to think about.

I would be sure to get it in writing and discuss with his physician. If you are talking about a DNR order (Do not resuscitate), then a living will can be of some help. You should have the Power of Attorney for health decisions. Legally, it all depends on if everyone agrees in how to proceed. Be sure he is not depressed and just saying this because of that/sam

Please discuss this with his medical providers. The DNR does not apply qhen considering treatment of an illness, only resuscitation in the event of a loss of heartbeat (loss of spontaneous circulation) or respiration. To choose not to treat illnesses, he will likely need to have a written living will specifying his clear wishes and parameters. Then, as P of A you are clearly acting as he requests and meeting your legsl obligations as P of A. His doctor would likelty need this document on file and be able to ensure your husband was competent at the time of setting these limits.

Thanks for information received, I'm normally pretty good at checking things on the web, but in this instance it hadn't even occurred to me. I am going to double check with our doctor but have gone on the web to 'patients bill of rights for healthcare in Ontario' and apparently any patient has the right to refuse treatment or medication. From what I've now read I don't think there should be a problem if I should need to follow his directive.
