Does Anyone Have Ideas Of How To Introduce Day Programs That May Not Be What Our Loved One Wants To Do?

My plan is to schedule my husband for day programs three 1/2 days each week because I think it is best for both of us. I feel the more time I arrange for myself and the more he is socially engaged, the longer I will be able to do this job effectively. When he is at home, he shadows me constantly and is unable to even sit watching tv unless I am sitting with him.

He has participated in an excellent program every Friday for several years so that is not an issue. Over the summer he has… read more

My Matt goes to an AWESOME medical care center 5 days a week!!I had a friend that told his wife that they (center)needed her there to help with the program!!She liked the idea that she was there to help and the staff was great about giving her little tasks that she could do so she thought she was helping!!
YOU NEED TO DO WHATEVER it takes for YOU to be able to continue caring for your loved one!!Most times, they will adjust and settle in to the new program!!
I absolutely could not do my Matt's care if he didn't attend his day center!!I have to know I have that break as he is my shadow every minute that he is at home!!The staff loves him and he likes it there!!Social for him and SANITY for me!!😇😇😇

Explain the why day care is needed calling it whatever is acceptable and that your patient participating there will enable them to stay with you longer without the need for hospital or nursing home. Be honest but gentle with the words you choose to describe the plan.

Thank you @A myALZteam Member. I agree that day programs are very important for both of us. Sometimes I feel like I should be able to provide activities to keep him busy but this is just not my strong suit. I can give him good care but I'm definitely no activity director so I know someone else must do this. We do still socialize with friends and he is very happy to shop and do errands with me but that doesn't keep his mind occupied during most of the day when I am doing routine housework, scheduling appointments, handling our finances, etc.

My MIL goes to an adult respite center 3 days per week. I knew that it I told her it was a day care should would not want to go. She has always been a really social person out and about, so I told her it was a social center where she could make new friends and do crafts together. She now loves it . It is run by the Area for Agency so it is on a sliding scale and costs her 150.00 per month. She can go as many as 40 hours per week for that amount. Best thing I ever did for her and ME
