Karen, contact your auto insurance agent. He/she will tell your husband about the uninsurable aspects of driving while a dementia patient. You are both potentially exposed to large liabilities in the event of an accident.

In addition to the suggestions above, remind yourself of 2 things, 1) driving equals independence and capability, and he is aware that he is losing both. A sad and painful situation for him, so be gentle in what you do. 2) Driving with dementia is a danger to himself and anyone on the road in his path so you must be firm and keeping him from behind the wheel. As difficult as it is, it’s the right thing!

There are a few things you can do, ask his doctor to talk to him about not driving then when he brings it up remind him of what the doctor has said. Talk to the DMV and let them know he has dementia and they will suspend his licence, and of course what Robert has said about the insurance company. You will have to remind him from time to time no matter what you do and eventually he will let go of driving. 🌹😊
