Mom is 88 and has been home bedridden and incontinent for 6 weeks now. She can only have clear liquids and puréed foods. She eats well, and has moments of clarity with other times asking for relatives that have passed or insisting to go

Pat is 73 and can remember little, even things that were said or happened minutes ago. Yet she, too, has those moments of clarity and asks “what’s wrong with me?”. I haven’t found an answer that satisfies her or me. For now, I just deny there is anything wrong. I’m becoming a consummate teller of little white lies. I do it so much that my conscious no longer recognizes them as untruths.
