How Long After They’re Immobile Does The Disease Last?
A myALZteam Member asked a question 💭

My mom has been in declining memory health for years but last year began having vascular strokes, at least 3 in the past year. She’s anxious, no longer able to walk and getting mean. She also has frequent hallucinations as is asking about family that has passed. My brother and I are her caregivers amend are seeing weekly declines. She’s in hospice care and on Seroquel, Alprazolam and they want to start Haldol.

Immobility does not define the disease longevity. The haldol will hopefully get rid of the hallucinations. Everything you describe sounds like later stage dementia or Alzheimer’s. Just care for her the best you can & keep her safe.

I would never suggest that regular meds that we all use for all of our various ailments not be used.
It's only the meds prescribed specifically for Alzheimer's that I would suggest greater care should surround their use. Specifically side effects that patient cannot complain about, and have been proven to have no lasting effects for Alzheimer's treatments..

I am fully aware of her death as a 37 year critical care RN that’s clear. I just don’t have to have her frightened and miserable until that day. I have always treated my patients with the utmost respect and will give my mother no less.

It makes me feel good to know that i’m not the only one who thinks continued medication to help ease any ailment is not a waste of time just because someone has a terminal illness. My father has dealt with hallucinations, anxiety and talking about passed relatives for almost a year. It’s been about 2 months since my dad has become totally immobile (although he thinks he can walk). He takes zoloft for anger but we’ve noticed his health decline since the immobility and now has advanced to his final stage of this horrible disease. It’ so hard to put a time limit since every case is different. Good luck and kuddos to you and your brother for taking care of your mom

Why is she on any medication at all? She is obviously dying . Can you not find a doctor who will tell you honestly what is happening.? The answer to your question is....til death.
