I am nearing the point where my wife and I will need to have assistance for her in our home and, eventually, full time assisted living care. We have Medicare, supplemental and prescription insurance coverage, but no other health insurance. She is 74 and I am 76 with her diagnosis coming about 2 1/2 years ago. I suspect there is no help to be obtained via Medicare and need to know the financial options looming.
It varies from area to area. I am an hour outside of D.C. , and charge $17.50 per hour and $250 for 2r hour care.I am experienced with all stages of ALZ, and different types of dementia. I also clean... A lot. It is just who i am. I like to keep busy.
Ask friends and family if they know if someone. That is the best way to find a caregiver. Companies hire just about anyone, and if they dont have empathy or love, you dont need them helping.
Do call your local Medicare office. There is financial help for needing caregivers available.
God bless you both.
Word from the wise... Apply for Medicaid now!!! For both of you if possible. You cannot afford the care she needs without Medicaid, personal insurance plan outside of Medicare, or if you are ex-military the VA plans will help also.
It very much limits what you can do in the later stages for Memory Care. We just do not qualify for private pay facilities. I kick myself we didn’t have a bit of life insurance for the living.
Long term care might be the kind you need. I’m not absolute sure of which kind of insurance we should have had for Alzheimer’s. Private pay in Houston TX starts at $5,000/month plus additional expenses for meals and depends.
I wish you success in your search for care. I could not find the in home care option I needs and was forced to put my Mom in a home. They just don’t treat her Alzheimer’s any different than an able minded person. It’s going to be worse when she starts to wander away. I just want to scream at our government and ask why. The memory care facility costs the same as the nursing home. ??? We are not taking care of our elders as a society. It makes me very sad.
It really varies as to where you are located. When I needed help here at home I called all my friends I could think of and told them I was looking for someone to be a caregiver so I could get away once in a while or shop for groceries.
Then I called several agencies and the typical charge was $19 - $25 an hour. Plus since we live about 30 outside the city there would be a mileage charge each time a caregiver came out.
A friend called and gave me the name of an acquaintance who lives fairly close. I didn't realize she did caregiving but she has been a lifesaver! She comes 2-3 days a week for 2-3 hours each time. She said she charged $10 an hour! Quite a difference from the agencies! I decided to pay her more than the $10 an hour.
Good luck!
The best advice I received was getting an appt. with an elder care attorney. Make sure they are Elder Care. They can inform you of the financials and make sure you have the documents you need. Good Luck.
Thanks for your help and experience. I don’t think we qualify for Medicade. I will pursue the in home care for now and hope things improve re: nursing home type costs in the future.
