My Dad Becomes Agitated And The Nursing Home Said Combative. They Put Him On Ativan And I Hadquit Taking And Stared
A myALZteam Member asked a question 💭

The nursing home called me and I was available to come to nursing home and they said he was combative. I got there and he was fine and they took him to get a shower. He told me that they “rule” Is there another option that they can do? Spongebath etc?

@A myALZteam Member As you are getting things organized for the trip, remember to bring a few things to make the trip feel more like home. A favorite blanket or the throw from the couch in case of a draft in the car? Try activiites that are calming like walks thru a park or listening to music. Share some laughs and a card game or read to him ... perhaps from the bible if that is your like. My Mom likes to grocery shop so I take her to look at things and often don't buy anything more than milk for her cereal.

Also I have noticed that Mom is much more with it when I make sure the meals have more fruit and veggies than anything. And although Mom won't eat salads, she will get her favorite veggies at least three times a week. I might change her meat but often the veggies are the same. She only has a few teeth so everything is well cooked, so I have been changing my diet to be sure that I get the foods that I like (salads, salmon, avacados, lots of crunchy veggies, and gluten-free) and this has saved me from tearing my hair out. The reason for the change was explained as "my Dr says I'm allergic to some of stuff she loves."

I think fresh air and exercise help too. And a different 4 walls can help your hubby to have the brain using more energy, so a need for naps or a good nites sleep may be imperative.

Best of luck with the move. I am sure it will all work out ok. -Sharon

Hi Joan and welcome...great group for support and info. From a nursing viewpoint it is better to do shower and check whole body for any sign of skin breakdown or bruising, edema etc.

Getting ready to MOVE to another residence in another state with my husband that has ALZIEMER'S. Our Daughter and her husband will be helping me take care of my husband. We are to stay in a motel for 3 days as they move our furniture etc. in so we won't have to be around all the mess of moving. Any other suggestions that might help as I truly am afraid that this will cause a decline in his situation.
