My 74 y.o. mom has been in a small board & care facility since February. It was a rough start with her wandering around the house at night, going into other residents' rooms, even going upstairs to staff quarters (she likely did this as her room at home was upstairs).
She eventually settled down but now 6 mos. later she has resumed those activities and has become incredibly hostile towards her primary caregiver. Throwing water at her, kicking, etc. She also tells the other residents that they… read more
My sweet gentle mother can hit and kick like a boxer when agitated or confused, and I am the sole caretaker. Her doctor has prescribed seriquel (Quetiapine Fumarate 25 mg. ) which I give her at bedtime and in the morning. It has really helped with the agitation, but she is able to talk and eat and is not in a "Zombie" state.
Update: Seroquel was not the answer for Gramma, the higher the dose the worse she seemed to get. They took her off it an she is now in Rispiradone. A high dose wasn't good but a low dose is working well so far. I have also worked with the staff to try to identify common triggers and things that comfort her. We went from threatening people with scissors to watching movies and petting the robot cat. *fingers crossed*
It's a few weeks since my original post and back to report that after some adjustments to dosage, the seroquel seems to be working. Still a bit agitated but much better, thank goodness!
Please advise all effects of this drug, my husband just got a prescription, does it help with paranoia and sundowners???
My gramma has similar issues. They have recorded 88 aggresive incidents since April. I wish I had some advice, but all I can say that you aren't alone *hug*
