My husband is still driving and yesterday the doctor's office called when I wasn't home and left a message with my husband saying he needs to go for a driving assessment, This would be the second one he has had, he passed the first one, but don't think he would pass a second one. Because it cost 550.00 to do I think he should have another memory test to see if he is even eligible to drive, why should we pay 550.00 to have the test, then tell him his memory his not well enough to drive. My mom refussed the test, said she was not a good test taker. We fibbed a little bit & told her the dr already turned her into DPS & her license was invalid. I told her she needed to make the decision to quit driving before we had to make the decision. I blamed the dr. It helped the family dynamics.
During a routine follow-up at the UW Memory Disorder clinic the doctor told my sister that based on the cognitive testing she'd done that day, they recommended she stop driving. The dr then notified the DMV. If you don't believe he should be driving because of his memory impairment, they he probably shouldn't. But follow-up cognitive testing is a good idea. Best of luck.
Our Dr. didn't even worry about a driving assessment just based on her responses to questions he asked her he said she could no longer drive anymore.
I do the same thing. I blame his Doctor for everything. He accepts this.
Do you have family who might care for your mom while you have back surgery? Maybe respite care?
