Is Quetiapine Good For Obsessive Behavior In People With Dementia?
A myALZteam Member asked a question 💭

My mom's obsessive behavior is driving me nuts. Trying new medicine Quetiapine 25mg (4 days) to deal with her obsessiveness but hasn't work yet. She was previously taking Temazepam 15mg and was very calm, happy, and sleeping well. After switching her to Quetiapine, she's not sleeping, is hungry all the time (new symptoms) and her behavior is not improving at all. Should I wait a little longer for the new medicine to kick in? Should I go back to giving her Temazepam?

To much can make them agitated.. My husbands neurologist said you have to be careful with that medication because for some reason it can cause people with dementia to stop breathing. He said he doesnt know why but it can.

I don't know if it is common practice for carers elsewhere to change medication whenever they think it is not having the desired effect, but you could be playing with fire unless you get the proper advice. Some meds 'kick in' quite quickly, but can still cause adverse withdrawal symptoms. Perhaps we've been spoilt in the UK, but I would never want the responsibility of which was the best drug for my husband
