Iv And Dehydration
A myALZteam Member asked a question 💭

My Dad has been on IV hydration for over 3 weeks coz he refuses to eat or drink.. the nursing home cannot force him to eat or drink and I get that..
However, lately he has been getting and drinking ensure and a few glasses of water a day.. How long can he survive on IV fluids, little water and ensure? He still remembers family.. I was told •not long for him• And then by someone else • he can live a long time•
Anyone been told conflicting information regarding their loved one?

As Elaine said, its different for everyone. How old is your dad? Does he understand that he has dementia? If so, perhaps this is the way he wants it. Hospice is definitely a terrific resource. They will definitely be able to help you with the "conflicting information". I was amazed at the assistance they provided when my brother-in-law died of a brain tumor in 2014.
