My 83 year old father is in stage 5. He falls about every 10 days. He is very stubborn and doesn't want to use a cane or a walker. I was hoping the doctor would convince him to use a walker. The neurologist instead is recommending physical therapy to improve his balance. I was under the impression that this disease will cause increasing deterioration of balance and the ability to stand and walk. Thus, I am wondering if it is pointless for my father to go to physical therapy?
My mom was falling and physical therapy has really improved her balance. Try it. They may resist at first but it is good for them.
I, too, encourage you to try the physical therapy. In my experience it is very helpful for balance as well as overall wellbeing. The key, of course, is for someone to continue working with him on a basic core of exercises once the therapy is finished so consider asking for a few examples and find someone who can work with him on these going forward. Something as simple as sit-stands from a chair is helpful.
You’re welcome! Cheryl! Keep us posted!
